A Day at the Blackhawk Museum

What a hidden gem right here in my own backyard! The Blackhawk Museum is for the car enthusiast, history buff and a great day out. My youngest and I recently went on his school field trip to learn about “The Spirit of the Old West” and what a wonderful experience it was.

We began our tour at the Spirit of the Old West exhibit exploring the life of the Plain Indians, American Settlers during the 19th Century and natural history of that time.

The Spirit of the Old West, Plain Indians

Our docent, the name for the guide at the museum, described the family life and the nomadic nature of the Plain Indians living off of bison as their main source of food and other items such as cups, tools, decorations, knives, and clothing.

We further explored the Native Americans ceremony and dances which were part of their everyday life, and how the American Settlers eventually pushed back the Native Americans to claim their lands.

Displays depicted the 1800 Expedition to expand westward, 1840 Migration of the California and Oregon Trail, 1860 Expansion and the Gold Rush of the American Settlers.

The kids were especially excited for the California Missions display and map.

Learning about the Natural history of the United States at the time. Pictured below a wagon used for migration west on the California and Oregon Trails.
